I have the unique privilege of speaking with really creative people everyday. And on top of that, they are often quite young.
Youth and energy is something you get once. But if you catch a few small tricks, you’re able to maintain it in yourself. One of those tricks is always being around those that are just gaining the freedom to act outside of typical institutions, just beginning to freely utilize their youth and energy on their own terms.
There’s a trend with incredibly successful music producers, that tend to stay in the game for much longer than you’d expect. And it’s all tied to having the kids in the studio. Showing them what they are into. I think this applies to everything in life for those that want to push towards their body of work.
Last week two interactions really sat with me, that reminded me of the importance of not shying away from publicly producing and sharing thought. Specifically around my recent “Issue”:094 ASK THE SAME QUESTION. I do not shy away from the importance of 10 year questions, nor do I shy away from the importance of 100 year questions. And the work / shared work it takes to achieve said image.
What last week reminded me, what is also shared in Kevin Kelly’s “What Technology Wants”, is that these questions emerge amongst others simultaneously or slightly delayed. A consequence of the environment, a spiritual desire for progress, and (I’d argue) being more networked than ever.
You might be in year 8 of your 10 year question, but someone around you might be in year 1. What then becomes your responsibility towards this person, in the infancy of their question?
What world might you open up for them, in ways that might seem blisteringly obvious to you? This is so much more impactful than you think.
I remember having a conversation in college that progress is kind of like reallyyyyyyyyyy tight concentric circles.
Someone moves one point on the circle up a little bit, and it makes room next to it. That point next to it might represent a subdomain, new domain, an entirely new field… that allows for a new set of questions. A new point to move outward, and so on.
We have a relationship to the questions that emerge to us. Directly with the question itself. Because it’s not just a question, but a manifestation of our collective subconscious. Meeting others with a shared question, is what some call serendipity.
There exists great divinity in all of this.
I’ve often written about production being spiritual. To bring something forth that was not there previously, from the recess of one’s mind is nearly supernatural. It takes an immense amount of energy, coordination, and faith that it is not utterly pointless.
Our parents before us had this concern. And our children will also have this concern. Nothing is new under the sun.
Some questions, like the nature of careering (shoutout Yatu & Norm), nearly all of us must face and make a series of choices around. Give in to the nature of serendipity. Do not approach it with too much skepticism, but also take obvious care of yourself (bad actors, etc).
What sits on the other side of this shared production, shared networked knowledge, shared process… well… I think there’s a few places and people asking that exact question right now.
I don’t do edits really, so excuse typos and things that don’t make sense.
Thanks so much for giving me your attention. I hope it was worth it, if not… unsubscribing will not hurt my feelings, and will give you back time you literally cannot have back.
Much love.
