I’m writing this from an Airbnb in SF.
Sean, Yatu, and myself are here to create some scenius magic. And despite Sean giving me an absolute jump scare this morning while he was strapped into the metaverse watching Dune standing in the middle of the kitchen… the trip is off to a good start.
One of my favorite episodes from The Bear is “Forks”. Richie is staging at another restaurant, spending his morning polishing silverware… slowly losing it. He hits the come to Jesus moment. And at one point he meets the head chef, she’s doing prep work. Naturally this surprises him, and he asks her why is she doing this vs a younger chef who would typically be tasked with this.
“I see it as time well spent.”
Olivia Coleman’s delivery in this moment is truly one of the most beautiful pieces of television I remember since peak Mad Men days. It’s just so simple, and so resonant for folks that really do love their work, and believe in the power of what that work can produce.
It reminded me of being in Tokyo and the reminder that every industry is a service industry. And when you let that set in, you see a real difference in why you’re doing any type of work at all. It’s part of the larger whole of experience.
Defining time well spent for yourself is one of the most important tasks of going day to day in this life. And there are plenty of little twenty dollar purchases you can acquire that promises to help ease the anxiety of this question.
Why am I in SF? Why have I struggled through years of building Eternal? Why do I cry when I talk about what technology can do?
To put simply, I view it all as time well spent.
This SF trip is just another exercise on what I believed would be time well spent → with friends, in meeting new friends, and in expressing a set of values I deeply believe in.
This has manifested in bringing Terminal (my follow up community project to Tweetups) to SF. I received a DAO grant to do what I dub as a “NEW INTERNET” retreat in Utah, but unfortunately the location we were going to use was going through construction.
Not wanting to lose momentum, I saw an opportunity to do something a little bit larger and a little bit more open.
TERMINAL SF is about transporting some NYC energy to the center of our older cousin that continues to teach us the lessons of obsession on big ideas.

I don’t do edits really, so excuse typos and things that don’t make sense.
Thanks so much for giving me your attention. I hope it was worth it, if not… unsubscribing will not hurt my feelings, and will give you back time you literally cannot have back.
Much love.
