I could write a lot about my friendship with Freddy.
We were introduced by Andrew McLuhan, which represents a very specific tuning to how our relationship formed. A shared love of both designing and studying the effects of technology, which allowed us a safe space for critiquing both the old and new products that fill our environment.
I really believe intergenerational friendships, specifically within technology, can unlock some magic. Finding that shared language & references, both sides being open to what they know & don’t know, and being generative through disagreement — this is a formula for success.
That also doesn’t mean to go out and badger someone because you want to extract xyz from them. I see a lot of naked attempts around that, and it lacks some really basic hospitality.
The video below is a real homecoming from the conversation Freddy and I had in San Francisco earlier this year. And it felt incredibly important to do this during New York Fashion Week.
I hope you enjoy. There’s some more details below the video.
On September 9, 2024 - Terminal NYC held an unofficial New York Fashion Week event. I sat down for an hour long conversation with Freddy Anzures at Earshot.
Freddy is known for many things within Apple design, including contributions to the original iPhone, "slide to unlock", and a lot of other designs he’s too humble to discuss over video.
He is currently a Creative Partner at Humane and giving love to his personal practice "Family Affair".
Discussion Notes:
The influence of growing up on Howard's campus
Designing at Apple
Dj'ing and designing outside of Apple
Joining Humane
Technology as a feeling beyond utility
Being ready for moments in technology (and life)
Relating to technology as style
I am not a video editor, so have grace that the video itself may come across as simple, and focus on the conversation itself.
Thanks so much for giving me your attention. I hope it was worth it, if not… unsubscribing will not hurt my feelings, and will give you back time you literally cannot have back.
Much love.
